The latest episode How I Met Your Mother, “Bad News,” took a very dramatic turn in the final scene, when Lily told Marshall that his father died. Speaking about this storyline this week and whether he was worried about the tone, Jason Segel said, “No, I was very excited. I like having a little drama in my comedy, because that’s what real life is like. It’s like James Brooks style. There is a 10% more demonstrative style on a sitcom. You have to sell a joke and all of that. And [with] this, the job is just to be honest, which I love. It’s my favorite.”

Segel revealed there was a lot of work by the HIMYM producers to keep this plot turn under wraps, explaining, “In the script we received, the last scene was, ‘Marshall, I’m pregnant.’ And then they told us on the day, ‘No, that’s not what’s happening.’ And they gave us the alternate pages.”

How I Met Your Mother’s new season kicks off Sept. 20, and, as expected, we can confirm there’s a wedding in the first episode back.

And though we can’t spill on the identity of the groom — and couldn’t tell you about the bride if we wanted to — we can say that “Big Days” lives up to its title. Ted inches closer to his mate in two of the series’ different time-lines.

So what can be dished on the episode without walking all over the code of spoilers? Let’s break it down by character:

Ted: The episode does show a “big day” in our protagonists’ life, but it’s not the one you’re probably expecting. “HIMYM” goes out of its way in the flashbacks and flash-forwards to keep two huge revelations a secret until the very end. (Though, we have note that when all is said and done, the mother count is still at “0.”)
